Postindustrial Places of Interest in Eastern Slovakia

MUSEUM OF AVIATION, KOŠICE

The museum is located near the Košice International Airport main terminal. It was founded in 2002 as an external exposition of the Slovak Technical Museum. A key role in the development of the museum was played by Rudolf Schuster, the president of the Republic of Slovakia from 1999 to 2004. Thanks to his efforts and requests numerous original historical airplanes were donated to the museum by the governments of different countries (mainly European). Among the exhibits there is a Polish plane 'Iskra' ('Spark') - designed for training purposes. It was a gift of the former president of Poland Aleksander Kwaśniewski. Apart of the planes, some helicopters, engines, other technical devices and even a ballistic missile can be seen there as well. In one of the rooms the detailed history of aviation is presented in an attractive way.

SLOVAK TECHNICAL MUSEUM, KOŠICE

The Slovak Technical Museum is located in the very centre of the city in a historical building. There are several departments devoted to different industries and branches of economy (metallurgy, mining, telecommunication, energetics) as well as to sciences (geodetics, cartography, physics, chemistry, astronomy, medicine, biology) in the institution. In some rooms visitors are encouraged to undertake interactive experiments, to check their knowledge in certain areas and to solve logical problems of different types.

OVER THE LAKE (NAD JAZEROM) RECREATIONAL AREA, KOŠICE

The Nad Jazerom district is located in southern part of Košice. In the communist period sand was exploited in the area for many years and a settlement for the industrial workers was built as well. However, since the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries a recreational complex around an artificial lake has developed there. In the special place different sports disciplines as e.g. water sports (including water-skiing on the tow line), cycling, volleyball, soccer and cross-country skiing (in winter) can be practiced by the Košice inhabitants and tourists. Some specialist equipment can be hired on site.

MUSEUM OF CINEMATOGRAPHY OF THE SCHUSTER FAMILY, MEDZEV

Medzev is the home town of Rudolf Schuster - former president of Slovakia (who was of a German descent) and the museum of cinematography was established in his birth home. Visitors can see some video cameras, cameras, projectors and other devices that were used by the members of the Schuster family who contributed significantly to the development of film industry both in Slovakia and abroad (e.g. in Brazil). Among the displayed exhibits there are also numerous publications by Rudolf Schuster and a copy of his PhD dissertation. The place has been visited by several world leaders including reigning monarchs. A Medzev blacksmith's shop belongs to the complex as well.

SOLIVAR TECHNICAL MONUMENTS, PREŠOV

The complex is located in Solivar - one of the districts of Prešov. In the past salt used to be exploited, boiled and stored there. Several buildings including a pit, a blacksmith's shop, a cooking room, a rattle tower, a warehouse, a brine reservoir and a chapel have survived so far. The exhibition shows the entire process of salt production in a historical perspective.
